Why Won’t My Video Play on iPad?

Apple devices will playback video in MOV, MP4 and M4V formats up to 720p that are encoded using the h.264 codec. There are a few reasons why a video won’t play on iPad. First, videos must be encoded properly. For additional specs, visit www.apple.com/ipad/specs/ and go the “TV and video” section. For more information on encoding, visit the Wiredrive video encoding guide.

Wi-Fi versus 3G

If your client reports playback errors, but you are able to view the same file on a different iPad, ask your client to switch to Wi-Fi mode. Large files will not playback if you are connected to the Internet over 3G.

Wiredrive Media RSS: Presenting content

This guide to media RSS chapter contains instructions and information about integration web developers.

Generating media RSS links

  1. Your client should have sent you Wiredrive presentations that contain the website media (see “Step 4: Send links and mRSS documentation to your developer” in Wiredrive client: Creating media content). If you have access to the Wiredrive system, you can create and send yourself the presentation links.

Codec Guide

Codecs are computer programs that compress and decompress video files. The codec you use to encode your videos plays a very important role in how they look when your clients view them. Just about all Wiredrive users compress files with the recommended H.264 and MPEG-4 codecs, but you may find it worthwhile to learn about additional codecs. Gizmodo’s guide to codecs explains the history of major codecs and video formats. We’ve boiled their article down to the essential information so you have a quick reference in the event that you are confronted with an unfamiliar codec.

Common Issues and Encoding FAQs

Our recommendations are in no way intended to constitute video encoding standards for your organization. Clients may adjust tools, settings and methods per their own requirements and unique situations. Our recommendations are based on our experience of what works best given real-world limitations, such as internet connections and processor speeds. Encoding Wiredrive Files for Playback on iPhone

Use the following guidelines to encode iPhone 3G and 3GS-compatible files. These settings will consistently produce a reasonably sized file without sacrificing quality.

Basic Encoding Settings

File Type:   QuickTime movie (.mov) or MPEG-4 (.mp4)

Codec:   H.264

Date rate (bit-rate):   appx. 1300-1500 kbps

Audio data rate:   128 kbps

Aspect ratio:   640×480 for 4:3 files; 640×360 for 16:9 files. Note: The first generation iPhone only supports video up to 480×360.

De-interlace:   If your source is interlaced, enable the de-interlace setting to improve image quality and remove video banding.

Crop/Letterbox:   This option may apply if you are changing the aspect ratio.

Fast-start:   Always enable

Encoding for the Web Terms and Concepts

About source video

Source content directly affects the ability of a compressor to do its job, as well as the overall quality of your encoded files. Fast cuts, rapid motion and quickly changing color fields put stress on the compressor resulting in larger file sizes and more artifacts [artifact: data loss that results in poor video rendering quality and is often objectionable to the viewer]. Talking heads on white backgrounds compress down smaller and look cleaner than high-action spots. Some film treatments intended to look “lo-res” can also end up encoded with artifacts.

Encoding for the Web Overview

Three factors affect online video playback: file compression (which you control); file delivery bandwidth (which Wiredrive controls); and viewing bandwidth (which the client controls). Wiredrive is able to deliver video up to full HD resolution, but your viewer’s bandwidth sets the practical limit of video deliverability. Regardless of what application you use, always keep the following guidelines in mind when it comes to encoding for the Web:
